Steve Shelley (Midland, Michigan, 1963) started his first band, the Crucifucks, together with his friend Scott Begerston, Doc Dart and Docs's cousin Joe Dart. After supporting the Dead Kennedys they were signed up by Alternative Tentacles.
Steve's interest in more experimental music was brought out in his work for Spastic Rythm Tarts. After house-sitting for Kim and Thurston while they were touring the UK in 1985, Steve was asked to join Sonic Youth when drummer Bob Bert left the band.
Like the other members of Sonic, Steve is involved in a number of side projects. These include his own band Mosquito and his contribution as a drummer to Thurston's Psychic Hearts.
Currently Steve's second band is Two Dollar Guitar. He plays in it together with Tim Foljahn and has released a number of albums on his own label Smells Like Records.
Steve Shelley also drums in Hallogallo 2010, a band also including Aaron Mullan from Tall Firs on bass, and Michael Rother from Neu! on guitar.
