Born in 1983 to a trumpet player and a schoolteacher, Mathias grew up in an enormously musical environment, which from an early age on influenced him in the way he chose his life to be.
After much struggle he soon found out that the, by his school teachers so highly recommended Recorder was not quite giving him what he was longing for. Next item on the list – The Trumpet, of course… Unfortunately Mathias and the Trumpet didn’t really seem to find the right chemistry either, so his “Midget Jupiter” had to face it’s terrible destiny. Drum, this natural, lovely primitive need to bash on wood and animals skin (…well plastic really…) soon caught up with young Mathias when he was around 11 years old. Having studied Snare for a while in a could garage, it quickly became clear, -there is more to it… Bass Drums, Crashes, Rides, Toms, Hats, Cowbells... well, you get the point.
A year and countless discussions with his parents later, there it was the Sonor Force 1000, possibly the meanest drums on the planet. Fully equipped with the “Force”, a couple of dodgy cymbals and numerous pairs of Czech cheapo Drumsticks he soon found himself in bands playing in bars and clubs around his hometown.
He was fortunate enough to have met Tilo M. Heinrich and Marcus Reiter - two very important people that influenced Mathias a lot and helped him along his way to study music. Getting him in touch with new musical stiles and introducing him to the great players out there, they did a great deal of education, guiding him towards professional musicianship.
1999, at the age of 16 he was admitted to the Music College Regensburg, Germany. Here he met Thorsten Loher an exceptional Guitarist who became a great friend and showed him what it means to play and live music. Mathias studied with Gerwin Eisenhauer and two years later graduated top of his class. The same year he moved to Amsterdam, the Netherlands to follow up his studies at the renomated Conservatorium van Amsterdam. The next years he had lessons with Lucas van Merwijk, Cyril Directie, Marcel Serierse, Martijn Vink.
Private lessons as well as Workshops with such masters as Robin DiMaggio, Terri lyne Carrington, Jack DeJohnette, Richard Bona, Zach Danziger, JoJo Mayer and Robbie Ameen he’s attended still remain sources of great inspiration to this day. 2006 he graduated Bachelor of Music. Shortly after Mathias joined Lucas van Merwijk’s Drums United, a big time Percussion show touring Holland as DJ Colin Spectre. Here for, he’s adopted his synonym Colin Spectre, working on Laptops and Live-electronics as well as Drums.
Throughout his career Mathias has worked with bands and artists such as Ninthe TobiasRegner DrumsUnited AliasGrey AngelaMenso ThomRevolver Project:Mikka ThorstenLoher Agnes Lazar and many more with venues like Paradiso Melkweg Zebra Lounge Rain Nighttown, TV-performances such as Raymann is laat and countless theaters on their touring schedules.
Apart from his musical activities, Mathias is busy writing articles, CD reviews etc. for magazines such as Raveline, the world’s leading electronic music mag. Mathias is currently working and living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
