Na de live-cd World of Rhythm en de live-registraties op dvd van Ritmo Inferno en World of Rhythm is er nu het eerste eerste studioalbum van Drums United, Heartbeat. Traditiegetrouw worden ook hier allerlei culturen tot een hechte eenheid gesmeed, met India en Senegal in de hoofdrol, onder de strakke leiding van de oorspronkelijk vooral latingeori�nteerde Lucas van Merwijk. Hij zorgt ervoor dat de composities nergens oeverloos worden, en dat de percussiemuziek nergens leidt tot exhibitionisme. Ook al door de instrumentale lijnen en af en toe vocalen gaat dit veel verder dan �getrommel�. De groove is overal sterk, maar nergens over de top. De harde, gezamenlijke
eaks (concept Doudou N�Diaye Rose), die de groep live zo kenmerken, zijn er wel, maar klinken hier bewust rustiger. Het collectief is zo sterk: Marco Toro met zijn geweldige klappen op de Venezolaanse tambor campana, Pape Thiam met zijn subtiele tama talking-drum, Nils Fischer met die bloedmooie bata-partij, Gianna Tam, die prachtig zingt, Aly N�Diaye Rose en Morcoumba N'Diaye Rose die excelleren op sabar, djemb� en bougarabou, Niti Ranjan Biswas, die de tabla virtuoos bespeelt en drie composities bijdraagt, het uitstekende programmeerwerk van Mathias Holzner, dat lichtheid geeft tegenover de percussiebatterij. En natuurlijk Lucas van Merwijk zelf, met zijn stuwende, altijd overweldigende drums. Tip: maak Ritmo Inferno tot single � die zou het zomaar goed kunnen gaan doen in de clubs: mind boggling.
