Paul Marangoni began drumming at the age of 13. Initially he was inspired by the music and drumming of The Beatles, The Who, Cream, Badfinger, Boston, Chicago, Led Zeppelin, Journey, etc. As his understanding and skills grew, Paul Marangoni became interested in bands like Rush, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Brand X, Jethro Tull, Bruford, UK, and Frank Zappa.
Eventually, Paul Marangoni found himself interested (or obsessed) in music with more improvisation thrown into the mix. He started listening to the Pat Metheny Group, Allan Holdsworth, Weather Report, Jean Luc Ponty, Mahavishnu Orchestra, John McLaughlin, Stanley Clarke, Return To Forever, Jeff Beck, Jaco Pastorius, etc.
Although Paul Marangoni was self-taught at first, he eventually studied privately and worked out of the standard books, such as "Syncopation" and "Stick Control", as well as more recent classics like Gary Chaffee's series of books. Paul Marangoni found the study of polyrhythms and meter very interesting and Gary's books are the cream of the crop in that area. More recently, Paul Marangoni has been working through John Riley's books and they're really transforming his jazz playing.
