Paul Buchignani is an American drummer who came into musical prominence for his work with The Afghan Whigs on the Black Love album and subsequent tour. Buchignani is a graduate from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. Post-graduation he worked for a law office before making the transition to full-time musician.
In the mid 1990s, he frequented Ardent Studios in Memphis, TN as a session drummer where he came into contact with legendary producer and sound engineer, John Hampton who has produced or engineered albums for such acts as: the Gin Blossoms, Soundgarden, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mudhoney, and The Afghan Whigs. Through his association with John Hampton, Buchignani built a relationship with Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs.
With drummer Steve Earle departing from The Afghan Whigs in 1994, Buchignani was asked to step in as the new drummer. Buchignani handled the drumming duties on Black Love and remained with the band from 1995-1996. He appeared in multiple music videos with the band including Honky's Ladder.
Post-Afghan Whigs, Paul Buchignani has remained busy as a recording and performing musician in Memphis, TN. He has appeared on recordings for Todd Snider, Matt Ramsey, and countless others. Most recently, he has contributed a musical performance to the film soundtrack for the movie Hustle and Flow (2005).
Also, Paul Buchignani shared the stage with Jim Dickinson (producer for Aretha Franklin, North Mississippi Allstars, and The Replacements) and the North Mississippi Allstars as a member of Amy Lavere and The Tramps.
Paul Buchignani is also drummer for Jack Oblivian & The Tennessee Tearjerkers.
