Niek van Wiggen (born September 1st 1961 , started playing drums and percussion at the age of eight. He played in from his 14th in local bands, and got his first lessons from Peter Elbertse, principle timpanist of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra.
He started his study at the Sweelinck Concervatorium Amsterdam at the age of 18, and studied with Ton Rooyers, Jan Labordus, Jan Pustjens and Jim Gordon.
He finished his studie in 1986.
Through the years Niek van Wiggen has worked with Mark Murphy, Toots Thielemans, Bart van Lier, Toon Roos, Rachel Gould, Ferdinand Povel, Rob van Krefelt, Philip Catherine, Nick Brignola, Claudio Roditti, Ed Neumeister, Marjory Barnes, Budd Shank, Jiggs Wigham, Ronald Douglas, Ronny Cuber, Teddy Edwards, John Ruocco, Dick Oatts, Sonny Fortune, Gary Foster, and others.
Since januari 2001, Niek is member of The Millennium Jazz Orchestra. The MJO is one of major bands in The Netherlands. Bigbands wich he worked with: Ruud Bos Bigband, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Dual City ConcertBand, Guus Tangelder Bigband, e.a.
Niek van Wiggen was also drummer (1995-2000) of The Highlight Jazz Orchestra,and the Barclay Bigband (1989-1992). Currently on regular basis also with the vocalist Ge Titulaer, Trio Johan Clement and
Zona Cool (Brazilian band with kind of jazzy influence with vocalist Tamara Maria).
Besides of all this Niek van Wiggen teaches at the Amsterdam Music School, and at the Centre of Art & Culture in Hoofddorp.
