Nicolas Field is a drummer, composer and visual artist. After studying at the Conservatoire Populaire of Geneva and a stint at the Drummers Collective in New York, he settled in The Netherlands in 1996 where he studied drums and percussion at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam (1996-2002) and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (1997-2002).
During this period, Nicolas Field took part in numerous projects ranging from contemporary music to jazz, improvisation and electronic music forms.
Nicolas began to travel through Europe as a drummer playing in various bands. The interest in electronics led him to gradually create drum solos including motion sensors and live electronics.
During the tour Nicolas Field started collaborations in the US, Japan, Korea and Australia. He collaborated with artists such as Otomo Yoshihide (guitar), Anders Hana (guitar), Keiji Haino (guitar / vocals), Seijiro Murayama (drum kit), Akira Sakata (sax), Anthony Pateras (piano), John Hegre (guitar), Tetuzi Akiyama (guitar), and Jeff Carey (electronics), Rova Saxophone 4tet Peeesseye.
Among Nicolas Field's most famous works are Buttercup Metal Polish (percussion duet with Alexandre Babel), Cask Strength (with the American musician Jeff Carey) and a duet with saxophonist Keir Neuringer American.
In addition to his live performances, Nicolas Field also works for dance companies and theaters. In 2006, created the music for Disco Pigs by Enda Walsh (Bâtie Geneva Festival). He also collaborated with the dance company and took part in the Festival Cie7273 Dance Antigel Geneva.
Nicolas Field is currently composing the music for the show at the Burgtheater in Vienna, which is scheduled to debut in 2012.
Between 2007 and 2009, to expand his knowledge of new media, Field took part in the postgraduate program immediately of the Academy of Fine Arts (HEAD) in Geneva.
In 2008 Nicolas Field published his first works as a visual sound installations: Gate 8 for the Mapping Festival Genevra and Think Thrice Dark Designs for the exhibition of the Maison d'Ailleurs Yverdon.
In 2011, Nicolas Field presented his new sound installation Shimmering Beast at the Swiss Institute in Rome.
In 2008, Nicolas Field was awarded a scholarship from the Foundation Liechti Geneva. For the year 2010/2011, he was Artist in Residence at the Swiss Institute in Rome. Since July 2011 he is an artist in residence at AIR Antwerpen.
Nicolas Field currently works on the phenomena of dispersion of the sound and feedback, and is experimenting with sound technical processes and many different materials such as dry ice or slate.
