Michael Sekelsky's degrees are: BM - University of Wisconsin, Superior - 1980, MM - University of Kansas - 1982, DMA - University of Kansas - 1989, all in Percussion Performance and Pedagogy. He is currently at the start of a three year term as chair of the Percussive Arts Society Drum Set Committee, and is serving a two year term as MMEA College/University Vice-President (2008 - 2010). Dr. Sekelsky is a past President of the Missouri Percussive Arts Society, where he continues to serve as webmaster.
Dr. Sekelsky is active as an adjudicator, clinician and performer. Recent adjudications/performances include the Missouri Valley Jazz Festival, UCM Jazz Festival, featured drum set soloist at the Mid-Missouri Percussive Arts Trophy Competition, and annually adjudicates at several area indoor drumline competitions. He served the Missouri Bandmasters Association for several years as an All-State Band concert percussion adjudicator, followed by eight years as a Missouri All-State Jazz Band rhythm section adjudicator. Sekelsky has performed with the Kansas City area Boulevard Big Band, Little Boulevard Band, Trilogy Big Band, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, and with several performers on the UCM campus including pianist Roger Williams, The Ink Spots, Arthur Lipner, and David Samuels.
Under Mike Sekelsky's direction the Marching Mules have performed seven times for the Kansas City Chiefs including a Thursday night ESPN game and two Monday Night Football games. The basketball Pep Band recently appeared at the Mens NCAA Division II Finals in Springfield, MA (2007), and as the host band for the 1998 NCAA Women’s Basketball Division I Final Four in Kansas City, Missouri.
Mike Sekelsky appears frequently on drumset with area jazz groups and is currently webmaster for the Missouri Percussive Arts Society, an educational endorser for Sabian Cymbals and Vic Firth sticks and mallets.
