Mathias Burchadt was the initial drummer in Gamma Ray. Mathias joined the band when Kai Hansen, guitarist and band leader, was looking for musicians to form Gamma Ray. At that time, Mathias was playing in the band Travental with Uwe Wessel.

Burchadt had a short appearance in Gamma Ray, with whom he just recorded the debut album "Heading For Tomorrow". For the band's next release, the EP "Heaven Can Wait", Uli Kusch had replaced Mathias on drums.
