Lol Tolhurst was born as Laurence Andrew Tolhurst on February 3, 1959 in Horley Surrey, England. He was the original drummer in The Cure when they started in 1976 under the moniker of The Easy Cure. Tolhurst, a 17 years old teenager attending St Wilfrid's Comprehensive in Crawley, Sussex, was joined by his schoolmates Robert Smith (voice, guitar), Michael Dempsey (bass) and local guitar hero Porl Thompson.



The 4-piece began writing and demoing their own songs almost immediately, and quickly amassed an impressive repertoire of original material that included such seminal classics as 'Killing an Arab' and '10:15 Saturday Night'.

Around 1982 Lol Tolhurst had moved onto keyboards and for the recording of the single 'Let's Go To Bed' The Cure asked Wreckless Eric drummer Steve Goulding to play the drums.



The Cure decided to go on a two-year hiatus in 1987, before releasing the album Disintegration in 1989. Along the way, the band continued their run of line-up changes, which culminated in the departure of Tolhurst (to form Presence), leaving Smith as the sole original member.



Tolhurst left the band after "Disintegration" was recorded. He was kicked out because he was no longer contributing to the band, and had a severe alcohol problem.



In 2003, fourteen years after Lol's (the name by which Cure fans know him) departure from The Cure, he laid down some truly impressive and rather murky electronic music with his wife Cindy, under the moniker Levinhurst.



With Levinhurst Tolhurst programs all drumtracks but stopped playing ophysical drums:

"I got to the point where I was kind of bored and I wanted to play around with electronic stuff. When we were in The Cure, we never really saw ourselves as "you're the drummer, you're the guitarist;" we just liked to play instruments to make the music. The keyboard was just a natural choice for me, being that it's more of a rhythm orientated instrument."

Levinhurst's first full length was released to the public in February of 2004, following a three song EP.



Previously Tolhurst had another outfit in the early 1990's named Presence.



Laurence Tolhurst and his wife Cindy live in California, right outside of Santa Monica for more than ten years now. They have one son.
