Overweight drummer and vocalist Fat Larry James was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1949. He became drummer and leader of Fat Larry's Band (aka FLB, known for their hits Looking For Love and Can't Keep My Hands To Myself). FLB also featured percussionist Darryl Grant.
Fat Larry James had previously worked with The Delfonics and The Magic of Blue.
In addition to FLB’s endeavors, Larry James also produced a portion of Slick’s latest LP (which features his wife as vocalist and songwriter), and has been involved in a lot of writing and studio work for various artists.
Larry James died of a heart attack on December 5, 1987.
Factoid: the opening drum break from Down On The Avenue, from the band's debut album, 'Feel It' (Stax 1977), has been sampled by many hip-hop artists, including NWA, Ice T, Jungle Brothers, and Run-DMC.
