Larry Garrett was singing, playing guitar, and drumming by the age of nine. But within a year, drums had edged out singing, and guitar was constrained to only the “quiet” hours. After 5 years of drum instruction, his patience and dedication was rewarded with his first drum kit. A white Pearl W5. By age seventeen, Larry Garrett was already a working drummer. The next year Larry Garrett was picking up session work and touring throughout the southeast. In 1996 he traded up to an Export Series kit. In 2011, Larry Garrett came back home to Pearl and the Reference Pure series. In 2012 he added a Vision Birch Lacquer kit to the stable to handle the touring duties.
Over the years, Larry Garrett has continued to work as a session player, live performances, and a very limited schedule as an instructor. His training in multiple instruments and music theory gives him understanding from both sides of the kit. He calls himself a "perpetual student". Having studied many styles, his current jobs pull him in different directions.
As the tour drummer for J Collins calls for the exactness and pounding groove of country/rock, the local fill-in gigs allow for more experimentation, and studio sessions that call for following directions. It’s all in a days work of getting the job done.
J Collins is a national Country/Rock artist, having shared the stage with Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, Chris Young, etc. He has been a featured CMA Music Festival artist in 2011 and 2012.
