Born in Newport, Arkansas on May 1st 1956 Kim Edens grew up with parents who both loved live music, not exactly a musical family, but his mother played the piano and still plays in church. He has one younger brother.
Kim's love for music and drums in particular started from a very early age, which was not a bad thing because it kept him out of trouble. He started trying to play drums on a borrowed set at about 14 and by the time he was 15 he got a set of his own for this birthday. The first bands he listened to a lot were Creedence, Doobie Brothers, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. He likes all music but rock is definitely his favorite!
The first band he played in did not have a name and just played a few birthday parties and picnics. The first full band he played in was called "Badge" (after the Eric Clapton song). According to Kim band names are always dumb until you sell a few million records and then all of a sudden anything is cool!
When he was 20 years old Kim went to New York with a band and played around the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut area for a few years. For Kim that was pretty exciting and fun but it didn't amount to much.
Kim can't really say that any single person was an influence but John Bonham was probably the first and Michael DeRossier (the original drummer for Heart) has always been a favorite. There were many other musicians that peaked his interest in music, such as Joe Walsh, Bob Seger and the Beatles, just to name a few.
Talking about highlights: that has to be his family! His wife is very supportive in anything he does; he really loves his son and his parents have also been supportive all his life. He appreciates them for letting him be whatever he wanted to be.
Kim became a musician because he just loved music. He likes to play all types of music but there maybe are some songs that are more fun to play than others. He mostly likes to listen to things that are of course percussive but also melodic. It all depends on his mood. Most recently he listens a lot to a guy from Austin, Texas named Monte Montgomery. This guy is just awesome and has lots of great songs. Kim likes a lot of different music both old and new!
Kim lives close to Memphis, Tennessee which has a good music scene. Through the years he has played in many bands around this area with lots of very talented people but there were none with any commercial success.
The first time Kim met Tony Spinner was in the mid 80's. They met through some other musicians that Kim had played with before. He knew right then that Tony was really special which is still very true today!
