Julian Thomas is nowadays best known as singer/songwriter. However, Julian began his musical career playing the drums aged twelve. Semi pro by the time he was sixteen he started singing backing vocals with some of the bands he worked with. The next few years were “a bit of a blur”, touring, recording, and having a fun time playing as many different styles and influences as he could.
Aged twenty-five, now a full time session drummer Julian Thomas first emerged from behind the kit to front a gig with a little known fusion band, at an even less well known gig in Basle Switzerland.
“It was a bit strange, the singer disappeared just before the gig (with the bass player’s girlfriend, I think), and we never saw either of them again! Brian if you are reading this all the best and I’ve still got your pork pie hat. Anyway, I got to cover for him while the guy on percussion covered for me. From the first song that night the band changed. Perhaps the percussionist was just a better drummer than me, but it seemed that my vocal influenced the style of the band in ways that I never thought possible. For me it was a revelation and a turning point.”
Twelve months later, still playing the drums to pay the bills, Julian Thomas was at last taking song writing and singing seriously. During this period, and working with a number of different acts including his own band the Julian Thomas we hear today evolved.
