Self-taught drummer Joseph "Joey" Edward Covington paid his dues with several Bay Area bands in the 1970s. He first drummed for Pacific Gas & Electric, known for the 1970 hit Are You Ready?, followed by Jefferson Airplane and then side project Hot Tuna, which featured Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and Paul Kantner.
A self-taught drummer since the age of 10, Covington (also know in his childhood as Joey Michno) helped found Blues-rock group Hot Tuna in 1969, alongside Jefferson Airplane members Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen, while Airplane singer Grace Slick was recovering from surgery. That same year, Joey provided percussion for Jefferson Airplane's 'Volunteers' album; he took over full-time drumming duties in 1970 when Spencer Dryden quit the group.
Joey Covington later played on the albums 'Bark', for which he co-wrote Pretty as You Feel, and 'Long John Silver', though he quit halfway through the recording sessions. In 1976, he co-wrote Jefferson Starship's With Your Love, a single that peaked at No. 12 on the charts.
More recently Joey played with the Bluesetta Band.
