Official biography:
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Jake Reed began playing drums at age ten. At age twelve he began a seven year study of the percussive arts under the tutelage of Dr. Dennis G. Rogers. That same year, he was first exposed to jazz when his grandma introduced him to a recording of Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. This further inspired him to be a musician while fueling his passion for the drums. While attending Park Hill South High School, Jake continued an in depth study of pitched percussion, the forty essential snare drum rudiments, as well as various drum set styles, and sight reading. These skills allowed him to audition into the Missouri All-State Concert Band for three consecutive years.
In June of 2007, Jake Reed received his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Percussion from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. While attending CCM, Jake had the honor of sharing the stage with such artists as John Clayton, Jiggs Whigam, Arturo Sandoval, Kenny Werner, and Marvin Stamm. He also had the privilege of studying with Phil DeGreg, Rick VanMatre, Brad Goode, Marc Wolfley, Rusty Burge, Art Gore, and legendary Stan Kenton drummer John Von Ohlen.
During his third year in CCM, Jake Reed was chosen to perform in the 2006 IAJE Ohio Intercollegiate Jazz Ensemble in Cleveland, and he was also invited to the 16th annual International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ) conference in Louisville, KY. That same year, he was accepted into the Henry Mancini Institute, a full-scholarship summer music program in Los Angeles where he performed with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Bob Sheppard, Chris Brubeck, Alan Vizzutti, and Vince Mendoza.
In addition to his collegiate studies, Jake Reed has also studied with world renown artists such as Jeff Hamilton, Peter Erskine, Harold Jones, Steve Houghton, John Riley, and Abe Laboriel Sr.
While in Cincinnati, he performed with local jazz icons Phil DeGreg, Steve Schmidt, Jim Connerly, Bob Bodley, Rusty Burge, Kim Pensyl, Cat City, and the Blue Wisp Big Band to name a few. In addition, he was a member of the Ian Ross Trio, and he was also the regular drummer in Phil DeGreg’s Brazilian Jazz/Fusion group Brasilia.
