It was the late sixties when Dutchman Henk Buijs first started drumming. was only 15 years old and still at school. That was also the place where it all began.
Henk Buijs' biography in his own words:
At that time there were not so many styles in popmusic as nowadays. In general, there were 3 mainstreams: Beatle fans, Stones adepts and those who were into soul. Things like Hardrock were heard not yet. And like today, it was easy to see which group you belonged to: by your clothes. A Stones would wear tight jeans and look a bit shabby, which was not done in the world of soul.
It was the soulthing I first experienced, because that's what the scene was at school. So one of my friends and me got the idea of starting a band. I hope someday someone can explain to me why it was called "Flower dead fear", cause I can't rememeber. Since I was fascinated by rythm, my place was between hi-hat, bassdrum and cymbals. Nobody told me what to do, so my main concern was to give the right bang at the right time. It took lots of time to make it sounds like drumming. Most important was we had a lot of fun. We still do.
During the early 70's, bands like Black Sabbath, Deep purple and Led Zeppelin became popular. Their music was labeled as Hardrock.Of course, nobody was used to the relativerly rough sounds they produced. This was no more flower power.
Today, however in an area of funk-trash- and speedmetal, we would classify them as softrock. But it was the sound we were attracted to and of our new band Retribution, started in 1970. We were also influenced by Supersister, a Dutch group, formed by Robert Jan Stips. In '75 Retribution fell apart, and for me a jammingless period started.
Until '78 my drumkit kept silence. Then my friends Rob Roos and Piet Salikroep asked me to join them. I did and a new band was born by the name of Midway. The difference between Retribution and Midway was like day and night. It was Elvis Presley we were focussed on. This turned out to be a smart choise.
The King of Rock, who died a year earlier, left an inexhaustible source of singing material, fit for both young and old. Yes, we did score at weddings and parties, but I can't say my heart was in it. You see, it's much more fun to play for an audience that especially has come to hear and see us, instead of some happy couple, that has it's weddingday. So after 3 years we quit.
In '82 another period of jamsilence started. This time it took 4 years, before I touched my sticks again. In '86 the brothers Baggerman, asked me for their Baggerband, a rather large formation. The band consisted of 8 memebers and contained a windsection. We combined old and new rockers like the Stones and U2. The rehearsels were kept in the Rocktown studio in Rotterdam. This went on for 5 years, before we broke up.
In '95 Ben and Ton (the Baggerman brothers) invited me again to form a group. Bassplayer Marcel Beljon joined us. The band had an odd name: De Kluts. There's a little story about this name. The first time we did a performance, we forgot to choose a name for the group. So just a few hours before we hit the stage, we were focused on to come up with no- matter- what -a- name. The same week at work, it had been very with clutches, not translated, but pronunciated in Dutch: Kluts, a name was born. We played Bowie, Peppers, Iggy Pop and U2 ad did the rehearsels in the garage. We were a cool band and had lots of performances and success. Like before, it ended after five years, in the summer of 2000.
Purely by coincidence, neighbour John heard I was available as a drummer and convinced me to join Dutch Roxy Music tribute band Re-make/Re-model to find out it will be a perfect match or not. During a test rehearsel I was completely taken by this music. In return, Ron the singer was very enthusiastic about my way of drumming. After 3 sessions, they would't let me go anymore! I really enjoy playing in this band and I put a lot of effort to make it sound like Paul Thompson and Roxy Music.
The songs are full of surprises and it' s fun to play them. I'm very thankfull to John, who made this all possible and to the members of Re-make/Re-model, to have faith in me. I will make sure my contribution to the band, will not dissapoint the fans! I give you my best!
