Bill Legend, whose real name is William Fifield, is the last surviving member of the 1970-73 line-up of rock group T.Rex.
Bill was the drummer for T.Rex during the band’s most successful era, first playing drums on the group’s ‘Hot Love’ single and going on to feature on four of the group’s most successful albums ‘Electric Warrior’, ‘The Slider’, ‘Tanx’ and ‘Zinc Alloy’.
One of three children, William Fifield worked as a commercial artist after leaving school, while playing the drums for a variety of bands.
He was drumming under his real name for a group called Legend, fronted by Mickey Jupp, when Marc Bolan, the man behind the new-found success of T. Rex, spotted him and asked producer Tony Visconti to approach him.
It was also Bolan who suggested the band’s new drummer should adopt the stage name Legend as a reference back to his previous group.
Bill Legend originally combined his early career as a commercial artist with his role as drummer for various bands.
More recently Legend also played drums regularly at Elim Christian Centre, Chelmsford, Essex.
In January 2011 Bill Legend/William Fifield emigrated to California.
