The yellow drum set of Vinnie Colaiuta that Gretsch had on display at NAMM 2017 was one of the treasures of the show. Completely refurbished after years of inactivity, the drum just look as new as they can be. This historic drum set was Vinnie Colaiuta's throughout his years with Frank Zappa in 1978 and 1979. Here are the specs and the story of the drum set after Vinnie Colaiuta returned to Gretsch in 2016. Added are videos of Vinnie playing the drums during his years with Zappa.
After his years with Frank Zappa, Vinnie's first Gretsch kit fell into disrepair eventually becoming unplayable. After returning to Gretsch, Vinnie Colaiuta mentioned the condition of the drum set. Gretsch offered to refurbish the whole kit. After many hours of hard work, with careful attention to detail, the craftsmen at Gretsch fully restored Vinnie's drums to the condition it once had.
Vinnie Colaiuta:
"This is my first Gretsch kit I've ever owned. And I wanted yellow because Tony Williams had this exact color.
At the time, only four other drummers in the world had a solid yellow Gretsch kit. Frank Zappa fell in love with this kit, especially the bass drum."
