Written and performed by Heather Thomas in a bedroom in Austin, Texas
Heather Thomas is a drummer and singer songwriter from Seattle, Washington traveling the United States
I wrote this song in isolation in Austin, Texas. I had made it through a bit of a mushy patch where I spent a few days doing little more than sleeping odd hours and watching Twin Peaks. At the beginning of 2020 I set out on an ambitious journey to spend each month living in a different city, and the sweeping effects of the global pandemic meant that I could no longer play live music or spend my days meeting new people. I have been able to re-focus and turn my energy inward, but it was a challenge to go from running all over town playing music and having fun to full isolation. This song goes out to anyone else who felt lonely or had to re-imagine their lives when everything changed all at once.
Lyrics:
For the first time in awhile I woke up in the morning
Sat out on the porch in the southern sun
Like my grandmother did when I was young
And I wonder how it happened that I ended up alone in Texas
When I set out on the road the world didn't look like this
I haven't used my voice in three whole days
I remember how it used to carry
Had a good thing goin' but the wheels stopped turnin'
And I wish you hadn't asked her to marry you
'Cause in my dreams we're all together again
It's a strange situation when you have to ask your lover to leave you
See I wanna be a woman who can sit down in the dirt
And I didn't mean to take it away, I didn't mean to tease you
But a simple disconnection's gonna save you the most hurt
I haven't used my voice in three whole days
I remember how it used to carry
Had a good thing goin' but the wheels stopped turnin'
And I wish you hadn't asked her to marry you
'Cause in my dreams we're all together again
I'm a complicated woman with a simple belief
That love and compassion's gonna get you where you need
And I don't run fast I keep my pace
I'm just sitting in the bedroom waitin' on the times to change
I'm just sitting in the bedroom waitin' on the times to change
I'm just sitting in the bedroom waitin' on the times to change
