\"What did you think those saddles and boots was about? (...) Inside every cowboy there\'s a lady who\'d love to slip out\"
The song, Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly (Fond of Each Other) may be the first gay cowboy song by a major recording artist.
Nelson said the release was timed to coincide with Oscar hopeful Brokeback Mountain. He also participates on the \"Brokeback Mountain\" soundtrack. Willie Nelson: \"The song\'s been in the closet for 20 years. The timing\'s right for it to come out.\"
But Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly (Fond of Each Other) was written long before this year\'s Oscar-nominated \"Brokeback Mountain\" made gay cowboys a buzz topic: it was written by Texas-born singer-songwriter Ned Sublette in 1981.
The veteran songwriter recorded the song in 2005 during an iTunes Originals session at his studio in Perdernales, Texas.
Previously San Fransisco gay punkrockers Pansy Division, currently featuring Luis Illades (photo) on drums, recorded the song for their 1995 album \"Pile Up\".
