This 2-CD greatest hits compilation released by Rhino Entertainment is widely considered by fans and critics to be one of the most definitive summaries of the band's prime era.
The 38-track compilation is a scaled-down version of the massive 4-CD box set "Chrome, Smoke & BBQ" released the previous year. It filters out the deepest cuts to focus entirely on the hits and crucial tracks from their first two decades.
The album is structurally split down the middle to showcase the band's massive sonic evolution:
For years, fans were frustrated by 1980s CD reissues that pasted artificial digital reverb and drum machines over the band's organic 1970s tracks. "Rancho Texicano" was highly praised for using remastered original audio mixes, restoring the punchy, authentic 1970s studio sound to the early tracks.
The compilation wraps up on Disc 2 with a few unique versions instead of standard album tracks, including a live performance of "Cheap Sunglasses", the rare "Legs (Dance Mix)", and the extended "Velcro Fly (12-inch Remix)".
The title is a playful portmanteau combining the words "Texan" and "Mexicano" to mean "Tex-Mex Ranch," a nod to the band’s signature cultural and geographic identity.
