WROC is my first vocal album since 2016! The lyrics were inspired by the etiquette book, “George Washington’s Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior.” I truly enjoyed turning Washington’s Rules of Civility (WROC) into ROCK songs! I hope vocal and guitar melodies will stir your heart and improve your table manners. Spit Not in the Fire! Album out on February 27.

I truly enjoyed turning Washington's Rules of Civility (WROC) into ROCK songs! I hope my vocal and guitar melodies will stir your heart and improve your table manners. Spit Not in the Fire!
"Let Thy Carriage" - Written and Produced by Paul Gilbert
Lyrics inspired by Washington Rules: 87, 82, and 60
The "Carriage" in this song is not a horse-drawn vehicle. Instead, it is "The manner in which one carries oneself." I suspect that I don't carry myself as well as I could. So I'm hoping this song might steer me in a better direction. Speaking of carrying things, this song features me playing a doubleneck guitar. Carrying the weight of this musical monster strengthens one's character... and one's back!

LYRICS:
LET THY CARRIAGE
BE SUCH AS BECOMES A MAN GRAVE
LET THY CARRIAGE
BE SUCH AS BECOMES A MAN GRAVE
SETTLED AND ATTENTIVE
TO THAT WHICH IS SPOKEN
CONTRADICT NOT, AT EVERY TURN
WHAT OTHERS SAY
LET THY CARRIAGE
BE SUCH AS BECOMES A MAN GRAVE
LET THY CARRIAGE
BE SUCH AS BECOMES A MAN GRAVE
SETTLED AND ATTENTIVE
TO THAT WHICH IS SPOKEN
CONTRADICT NOT, AT EVERY TURN
WHAT OTHERS SAY, WHAT OTHERS SAY
UNDERTAKE NOT WHAT YOU CANNOT PERFORM BUT BE CAREFUL
KEEP YOUR PROMISE
BE NOT IMMODEST IN URGING YOUR FRIENDS TO DISCOVER
TO DISCOVER A SECRET
LET THY CARRIAGE
BE SUCH AS BECOMES A MAN GRAVE

Paul Gilbert - Orderly And Distinctly
WROC is my first vocal album since 2016. The lyrics were inspired by the etiquette book, "George Washington's Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior." I truly enjoyed turning Washington's Rules of Civility (WROC) into ROCK songs! I hope my vocal and guitar melodies will stir your heart and improve your table manners. Spit Not in the Fire!
"Orderly and Distinctly" - Written and Produced by Paul Gilbert
Lyrics inspired by Washington Rules: 35, 80, 69, 73, 99, and 4
Six different Washington rules went into this one! My favorite is "Be not tedious, unless you find the company pleased therewith." Does this mean that if there is a supportive audience, it's all right for me to play guitar solos that are way too long? Rule #80 says "Yes! Play those long solos!" Speaking of solos, the one in this song is of average length. But just to make sure it didn't become "tedious," I overdubbed a cowbell. This raises the question of "how much" cowbell should be in the mix. We all know there is only one answer to that.

BE NOT TEDIOUS, UNLESS YOU FIND

Paul Gilbert - Maintain a Sweet and Cheerful Countenance

I truly enjoyed turning Washington's Rules of Civility (WROC) into ROCK songs! I hope my vocal and guitar melodies will stir your heart and improve your table manners. Spit Not in the Fire!
"Maintain a Sweet and Cheerful Countenance" - Written and Produced by Paul Gilbert
Lyrics inspired by Washington Rules: 105, 15 and accidental hallucinations by Claude
I wrote this song early in the project, and I was still relying on Claude the AI to provide me with accurate Washington rules. Unbeknownst to me at the time, Claude would easily hallucinate new ones! Fortunately, he didn't stray far, and Washington rules 105 and 15 are pretty close to the final lyric. So I maintained a cheerful countenance!

Paul Gilbert - Keep Your Feet Firm and Even
WROC is my first vocal album since 2016.
"Keep Your Feet Firm and Even" - Written and Produced by Paul Gilbert
Lyrics inspired by Washington Rules: 10 and 19
Decades ago, when I first came across the Washington Rules of Civility on my bookshelf, I read the introduction and thought, "I am a civil person. I bet I can follow all these rules easily!" As I read further, I realized that some of the rules might be more challenging than I had anticipated. As I am typing this now, I am in fact "putting one foot on the other and crossing them while I sit." (breaking a Washington rule.)
So admittedly, I sometimes struggle to rise to Washington-style civility. But to compensate, I wrote a mean guitar riff, a whammy bar solo, and great big harmonies for the chorus. I do the best with what I've got.
Paul Gilbert: Vocals and Guitar
Doug Rappoport: Guitar
Timmer Blakely: Bass
Nick D'Virgilio: Drums

LYRICS:
WHEN YOU SIT DOWN KEEP YOUR FEET
FIRM AND EVEN, FIRM AND EVEN
KEEP EVEN FEET WHEN YOU SIT
WHEN YOU SIT DOWN KEEP YOUR FEET
FIRM AND EVEN, FIRM AND EVEN
KEEP EVEN FEET WHEN YOU SIT
SIT WITHOUT PUTTING ONE FOOT
ON THE OTHER, ON THE OTHER
OR CROSSING THEM WHEN YOU SIT
SIT WITHOUT PUTTING ONE FOOT
ON THE OTHER, ON THE OTHER
OR CROSSING THEM WHEN YOU SIT
LET YOUR COUNTENANCE
COUNTENANCE BE PLEASANT
BUT IN SERIOUS MATTERS
SOMEWHAT GRAVE
LET YOUR COUNTENANCE
COUNTENANCE BE PLEASANT
BUT IN SERIOUS MATTERS
SOMEWHAT GRAVE

Paul Gilbert - Conscience is the Most Certain Judge
WROC is my first vocal album since 2016. The lyrics were inspired by the etiquette book, "George Washington's Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior." I truly enjoyed turning Washington's Rules of Civility (WROC) into ROCK songs! I hope my vocal and guitar melodies will stir your heart and improve your table manners. Spit Not in the Fire!
"Conscience is the Most Certain Judge" - Written and Produced by Paul Gilbert
Lyrics inspired by Washington Rule 79 and accidental hallucinations from Claude
In the early stages of writing the lyrics for this album, I used Claude the AI to help me organize my thoughts. In the process, Claude hallucinated some new rules that are not in the Washington book! Claude's hallucinations were actually quite good, so I was fooled for a few days. I wrote two songs with these hallucinated Claude rules before it occurred to me to double-check them for accuracy. My heart sank when I discovered I had drifted from the "real" Washington rules. I debated whether to still use the songs... but I liked the music that I had written! And the lyrics still felt good to me. So Claude gets both credit and blame for this one. There is still a genuine Washington rule in the chorus, which is: "Be not apt to relate news, if you know not the truth thereof." I guess both Claude and I can learn from that one. Either way, I love singing and playing this song!

Paul Gilbert - Show Not Yourself Glad
WROC is my first vocal album since 2016. The lyrics were inspired by the etiquette book, "George Washington's Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior." I truly enjoyed turning Washington's Rules of Civility (WROC) into ROCK songs! I hope my vocal and guitar melodies will stir your heart and improve your table manners. Spit Not in the Fire!
"Show Not Yourself Glad (At the Misfortune of Another)" - Written and Produced by Paul Gilbert
Lyrics inspired by Washington Rules: 22, 58, and 9
Happy 2026! In case you haven't found a worthy New Year's resolution, how about: "Show not yourself glad at the misfortune of another"? This Washington rule is easier than it looks, as it doesn't forbid you from feeling glad at an enemy's misfortune. It just tells you not to show it!
If you listen to this new song and my older song, "Enemies (In Jail)," next to each other, they'll likely cancel each other out, as their messages are pretty much the opposite of one another. In any case, enjoy the crazy chords, the sweeps in the slide solo, and the layered vocal harmonies. This song also contains a second possible New Year's resolution: "Spit not in the fire."
I predict 2026 will have much less spitting in fires. Happy New Year!
Paul Gilbert: Vocals and Guitar
Doug Rappoport: Guitar
Timmer Blakely: Bass
Nick D'Virgilio: Drums
Everyone sang the harmonies

LYRICS:
SHOW NOT YOURSELF GLAD
AT THE
MISFORTUNE OF ANOTHER
SHOW NOT YOURSELF GLAD
AT THE
MISFORTUNE OF YOUR BROTHER
LET YOUR CONVERSATION
BE WITHOUT ENVY OR MALICE
FOR IT IS A SIGN
OF A TRACTABLE AND COMMENDABLE NATURE
BE WITHOUT ENVY OR MALICE
FOR IT IS A SIGN
OF A TRACTABLE AND COMMENDABLE NATURE
SPIT NOT IN THE FIRE
SHOW NOT YOURSELF GLAD
AT THE
MISFORTUNE OF A NEIGHBOR
SHOW NOT YOURSELF GLAD
AT THE
MISFORTUNE OR A FAILURE
LET YOUR CONVERSATION
BE WITHOUT ENVY OR MALICE

"If You Soak Bread in the Sauce" - Written and Produced by Paul Gilbert
Lyrics inspired by Washington Rules: 94 and 18
The holidays are upon us! That means feasting. And that means minding our manners at the table. How much saucy bread should you put on your knife at a time? This song will give you the answer! What about reading letters at the table? The rousing chorus will guide you. Bon Appétit!

"Go Not Thither" - Written and Produced by Paul Gilbert
Lyrics inspired by Washington Rules: 53, 54, 55, 68, 3, 4, and 72
Hundreds of years ago, everyone must have been walking around kicking the earth. They kicked the earth so much, that a rule had to be invented to put a stop to it!
The rule to "Play not the peacock" is more difficult to follow. I know this, as I can't resist playing guitar solos while wearing a tricorn hat.

Lyrics:
RUN NOT IN THE STREETS
NEITHER GO TOO SLOWLY
KICK NOT THE EARTH
KICK NOT THE EARTH
PLAY NOT THE PEACOCK
LOOKING EVERYWHERE ABOUT YOU
TO SEE IF YOU BE
TO SEE IF YOU BE
WELL DECKED
IF YOUR SHOES FIT WELL
IF YOUR STOCKINGS SIT NEATLY
AND CLOTHES HANDSOMELY
GO NOT THITHER WHERE YOU KNOW NOT WHETHER
GO NOT THITHER WHERE YOU KNOW NOT WHETHER
GO NOT THITHER WHERE YOU KNOW NOT WHETHER
YOU SHALL BE
WELCOME OR NOT, WELCOME OR NOT
SHOW NOTHING TO YOUR FRIEND
THAT MAY AFFRIGHT HIM
DRUM NOT WITH YOUR FEET
DRUM NOT WITH YOUR FEET
PLAY NOT THE PEACOCK
LOOKING EVERYWHERE ABOUT YOU
TO SEE IF YOU BE
TO SEE IF YOU BE
WELL DECKED
IF YOUR SHOES FIT WELL
IF YOUR STOCKINGS SIT NEATLY
AND CLOTHES HANDSOMELY
GO NOT THITHER WHERE YOU KNOW NOT WHETHER
GO NOT THITHER WHERE YOU KNOW NOT WHETHER
GO NOT THITHER WHERE YOU KNOW NOT WHETHER
YOU SHALL BE
GO NOT UPON THE TOES
IN A DANCING FASHION
EAT NOT IN THE STREETS
EAT NOT IN THE STREETS
SPEAK NOT
IN AN UNKNOWN TONGUE
NOT VULGAR
SUBLIME MATTERS TREAT SERIOUSLY
GO NOT THITHER WHERE YOU KNOW NOT WHETHER
GO NOT THITHER WHERE YOU KNOW NOT WHETHER
