Subdued and layered, you have to listen to the Q-Club's debut album with the volume way up, and yet it's still meant for lazy, rainy day or Sunday afternoon listening. Yet it's the intricate and beautiful music that make this album so astounding. Turn it up, or you might miss the delicate keyboard, the light, airy percussion, the layers of groovy guitars, the deep bass, and the use of horns and strings. Evoking images of Tindersticks, Raskolnikov and the Velvet Underground, the Q-Club's' music is soulful and groovy yet still undeniably modern. This band embraces long, soulful grooves, as willing to just jam in a quiet and reserved manner as crooning out the vocals and layering on quiet keyboard and drums. The songs on this album are at once brash and delicate, sincere and crass, self-assured and insecure – but always riveting. The Q-Club's - "The Land Of Cockaigne" is a wonderful must.
