Ted McKenna (Glasgow, 1950) is probably best known as drummer in The Michael Schenker Group (MSG).
As a kid he studied a year under Glasgow big band veteran, Lester Penman. McKenna played in 'Vibration' (one year at school) and 'Rare Breed', which becamse 'Bubbles' (two years at school and one year professional). A few months with 'Dream Police' before the start of Tear Gas in 1970. Thsi band was followed by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band (1972). Several years later he did sessions with Dan McCafferty and Ian Gillan, played in the Rory Gallagher Band and The Greg Lake Band, before joining Michael Schenker Group.
McKenna joined this latter band in April 1982, replacing previous drummer Cozy Powell. At the end of 1986/early 1987 McKenna had left and was followed up by Bodo Schopf.
Afterwards Ted McKenna played with Billy Rankin and Phenomena. Currently, Ted is teaching at a music college (not drumming but the business side of music) and is setting up a new band with a view to encouraging young musicians and giving them some form of 'apprenticeship'.
