Momoko Kamiya is a gifted marimbist, was enrolled in Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and music with the honour of being the first successful candidate as a marimbist soloist. In the following year, she entered Juilliard School in New York and completed the Bachelor of music course in three years and was honoured with many scholarships and awards, including Soul Goodman, Morris Goldenberg, Naumberg, and Juilliard Association awards. She began her professional career with her debut recital at Suntory Hall in Tokyo in 1990 and has presented numerous concerts and recitals since, each surpassing the last. The first prize she won in Luxembourg International Marimba competition in 1995 made her career known worldwide. She has released five recordings on the Phillips label: "Marimba Cocktail"(1996 won best recording prize), "Arabesque"(1997), "Marimba Japanesque"(1998), "Asian Scene"(1999), and most recently "Marimba virtuoso"(2002). She has also recorded solo performances for CD's of Toshi Ichianagi and Tokuhide Niimi of their works. Her recent activity is multifaceted; besides her recitals, concerts and recordings, she has also made numerous concerto performances with major orchestras in Japan. She was selected as one of 'The Top Young Artists Today' by the Toyota foundation who sponsored her recital in Kioi Hall, Tokyo (2001). She often performs on radio, and television and has hosted the 'Music and Talk' program throughout 2000 (NHK Radio).Since 2000, she has extended her career to abroad, and has been invited to perform in recitals, and master-classes in Poland, Belgium, Mexico and China. She has also been a jury member at the first Polish National marimba Competition, the first Belgium International Marimba Competition, and Chiapas National marimba competition. In 2003 she has been invited from 4 countries. Her distinguished performance is much acclaimed in public and highly received by critics, often described on major printings as: supreme combination of sensitive sound and dynamism: tremendous stage supported by stable technique and talent: splendid visual fascination: a large repertoire of works from classical to contemporary, and transcriptions. Owing to her profound musical interpretation, she also has composers' confidence as a reliable player for their premiers. She has been a faculty member of Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, Okinawa Prefectural Univ.of Art, Aich Prefectural Univ.of Art, and Heisi Univ. of Music.
