Growing up in the heart of Cuba and listening to the seductive sound of Andy Fornet conjuring up compelling rhythms, Michel Castellanos knew that his future lay somewhere in the magic of the drums and timbales. He studied technique at the prestigious Antonio White Music College in Camaguey, Cuba, but his artistry was self-taught and through years of experience, Castellanos was able to infuse his own sound with a potent variety of African, Afro-Cuban, Spanish and South American styles. That remarkable, creolised vibrancy remains a guiding influence and whatever he’s playing, the Latin grooves of his background still texture Michel Castellanos' work, helping to define both his musical universality and unique style.
At the age of only 16 Michel Castellanos left college and moved to Havana, the cultural and musical capital of Cuba. After catching the eye – and ear – in several smaller bands, he landed the prized position of playing drums for the celebrated Sur Caribe. It proved a brilliant move for the band, and for Castellanos, and together they achieved notable success culminating in a world tour and a number one album.
Eager to experience new musical horizons, Michel Castellanos moved to London where he has built a reputation as one of the UK's top session drummers, touring with Omar Puente, Alex Wilson, Ska Cubano and Anthony Joseph, as well as the National Venezuela Orchestra.
When Michel Castellanos's not traveling the world, delighting audiences from Paris to Poland and beyond, Castellanos plays weekly at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Central London, performing with a string of top Cuban bands. Michel has worked with and learnt from the very best in the business; Courtney Pine, Chucho Valdes, Omar Puente, Cirque du Soleil… but his ambition remains a strong factor in his life and career and he is persistently dedicated to the magic of Cuban music that beguiled him as a boy.
