Multi-Percussionist Joseph Gramley is a soloist and chamber musician who has presented performances at concert halls throughout the world. A native of Oregon,
Mr. Gramley gave his solo debut recital at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in New York and his concerto debut with the Houston Symphony, conducted by Christoph Eschenbach, both in 1992 after graduating from the University of Michigan the same year. After receiving a Master's degree from New York's Juilliard School in 1995, Mr. Gramley performed for four years with the Ethos Percussion Group, touring extensively throughout the United States and Europe.
Since embarking on a solo career, Mr. Gramley has been an active recitalist and collaborator. He is percussionist for Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project, and in this capacity has toured throughout the world premiering numerous compositions. Mr. Gramley has appeared in concert in Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei (National Theatre), Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Paris (Cite de la Musique), Lyon, Brussels, Koln (Philharmonie) New York (Carnegie Hall), Seattle (Benaroya) Stanford and Cal-Berkeley among others.
Mr. Gramley was featured playing solo marimba on the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards from the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center where he co-wrote and performed the introduction to Jennifer Lopez' #1 hit "If You Had My Love". Other distinguished collaborators include Keiko Abe, Aretha Franklin, Bright Sheng, Glen Velez and David Robertson. As a soloist Joseph Gramley has premiered many new works and is committed to bringing new and accessible compositions to the broader public. In addition to his signature publishing series for new percussion works with Alfred Publishing in Los Angeles, Joseph Gramley received a 2002 Meet-The-Composer grant to commission a new solo multiple-percussion work. Other recent commissions include works of Loretta Notareschi, C. Bryan Rulon, Charles Griffin and Kenton Bales. He has won many national and international solo competitions including the East and West Artists International Competition in New York in 1994, The Houston Symphony National Young Artist competition and the first Percussive Arts Society International Talent Search, leading to his Los Angeles solo debut at the organization's 1991 international conference. In 1988 he was named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, subsequently receiving the Presidential Medallion and performing as a soloist at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Joseph Gramley has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, Good Morning America, CNN, PBS and MTV. Live radio appearances include programs on WNYC and WQXR in New York, and nationally on NPR (Performance Today, Soundcheck, Echoes), for the BBC and CBC. His first solo recording is entitled "American Deconstruction," and he is featured on the new Yo-Yo Ma release, Silk Road Journeys on Sony Classical.
He has also recorded with the Ethos Percussion Group, Orchestra of St. Luke's, Essential Music, Yousif Sheronick, Eos Orchestra, St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble and on the labels of Telarc, Deutsche Grammaphon, Arabesque, Equilibrium, Koch, Connoisseur Society, Nuova Era, and Boosey and Hawkes. Joseph Gramley is director of the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar, an intensive summer program for high school students at Lincoln Center.
Other summer festivals at which Mr. Gramley have appeared are Spoleto USA, Lincoln Center Festival, Spoleto Italy, Tanglewood, Interlochen and the Salzburg Mozarteum. Among engagements for the 2002-2003 season are solo performances in New York, Connecticut, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Montana.
