Joost Pato?ka (born July 1, 1969, in Amsterdam) is one of the most prominent and sought-after jazz drummers in the Netherlands. Known for a style that is both historically grounded and adventurous, he has spent over 30 years as a mainstay in the Dutch jazz scene.

Patocka is widely recognized for his long-term musical partnerships with Dutch jazz legends.

• Rita Reys: He served as the regular drummer for the "Europe's First Lady of Jazz" for 12.5 years, a period he describes as deeply influential to his understanding of swing and accompaniment.


• Benjamin Herman: He has been a core member of the Benjamin Herman Trio for over 25 years.


• Krupa & The Genes: Together with fellow drummer Stefan Kruger, he leads this unique "double everything" ensemble (two drummers, two guitarists, two saxophonists).


• Other Notable Collaborations: He has performed and recorded with international stars like Branford Marsalis, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Nat Adderley, as well as Dutch artists such as Jesse van Ruller, Piet Noordijk, and Ruben Hein.

Beyond performing, Patocka is a highly influential educator and media figure within the drumming community.

• Teaching: Since 2007, he has been a professor of jazz drums at Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam.


• Podcast & Publishing: He produces the podcast Why Everyone Hates Jazz (Wat iedereen vindt van jazz) and is the creator/publisher of the specialty drum magazine Ouwe Kaas.


• Corporate Training: Through his company Patocka & Co, he uses the principles of jazz improvisation to teach teamwork and leadership in business settings.

Based in the village of Aartswoud, Patocka is deeply involved in local cultural life. He organizes the annual Trommel Jazz Festival and is the artistic leader of the Aartswoud Jazz Church.
