Korean percussionist Ji Hye Jung has been studying marimba since the age of five. She has performed as soloist with most of the premier orchestras in Korea, including the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, the Korean Symphony Orchestra and the Eurasian Philharmonic, with which she has given over fifty concerto performances. She was the recipient of the Gum Ho Young Artist Award when she was 15 years old, subsequently presenting her first solo recital at the Seoul Arts Center in 1998.
Ms. Jung came to Baltimore in 2003 to study with Robert Van Sice at the Peabody Conservatory. She has been a member of the Norfolk Chamber Music Ensemble, where she collaborated with composers Martin Bresnick and Ezra Laderman. Last spring Miss Jung returned to Korea to present a series of recitals and master-classes with Mr. Van Sice and is currently a faculty member of Peabody Preparatory.
In August of 2005, she was a participant in a series of master-classes given by Keiko Abe as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Ms. Jung also spent part of summer 2005 at Aspen Summer Music Festival. She has performed in Carnegie Hall with David Robertson for the Carnegie Hall workshop.
In June of 2006, Ms. Jung was named as one of four top finalists for the prestigious Ima Hogg Young Artist Competition. Students from more than 60 music colleges, universities and conservatories faced off in the preliminary round, with 10 musicians traveling to Houston for the semi-final and final rounds at Stude Concert Hall in the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. The four finalists triumphed over more than 90 musicians from 16 states within the U.S.
