Frank Michiels, born in a musical family, studied musicology at the Leuven University and percussion at the music academy of Etterbeek, Brussels.
His carreer covers a wide scope of musical fields : jazz, pop music, ethnic music.
In the jazz world, he had the opportunity to play with Milkshake Banane - with a.o. Johan and Peter Vandendriessche (saxes), Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, the European Jazz Big Band.
Very active in the recording studios, he worked with Myriam Makeba, Mory Kante, the group Soulsister and many others.
Frank Michiels is also a music ethnologist. Very interested by African music, he works for the world famous "Royal Museum of Centra Africa" in Tervueren (Belgium). He also did research work in countries such as Congo, Rwanda, Kenya, Puerto-Rico, Ivory Coast, etc...
For ten years, he teaches percussion at the Royal Music Conservatory in Brussels.
Recently, he was involved in the Bioritmix project, which appeared in Brussels and was a unique gathering of percussionnists from the whole world : Trilok Gurtu (India), Madjid Khaladj (Iran), DouDou N’Diaye Rose (Senegal), Kian-Zo (Ivory Coast), Hiba Burundi drummers, the Gamelan duo Made (Indonesia), etc... On this occasion, these artists were guests of his own 10 piece Belgian Percussion Ensemble.
He also participated in the albums of the band The Demagogue Reacts with Johan Vandendriessche, titled "Action Reaction" and "Kazzbah".
With drummer Herman Cambré he participated as a percussionist in the live band of Clouseau.
