Bucyrus native drummer Sam Brown has indie-rock bands New Bomb Turks and The Sun on his resume. The drummer is currently part of the three-piece group Divine Fits.
Sam Brown joined forces with Britt Daniel of Spoon and Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner to create the self-titled album 'Divine Fits'.
Two decades ago Sam Brown started out by playing drums in the dining room on his dad's old kit. It was friend, 1990 Bucyrus High School classmate and fellow musician Chris Michael, who taught Sam to play beats so the two could cover Kiss songs.
In addition to the Bucyrus High School marching band, Sam and Chris formed bands with Sam Brown's first wife Annia Light, friend Jayson Brown and others.
After moving to Columbus in 1991, Sam played his first gigs in bars with another Bucyrus native, Sean Beal, in Feversmile. That band morphed into Train Meets Truck and Beal eventually went on to Big Back Forty.
By 1999, the New Bomb Turks asked Sam to help with their record and that led to his first overseas tours. A similar "helping out" landed him in The Sun, which got a big initial push from the Warner Brothers label. Brown supported hip-hop artist RJD2 for three tours.
It was through these connections that Sam Brown met Spoon producer Mike McCarthy, who recorded The Sun's last album. McCarthy's invitation to Texas led to Brown, Daniel and Boeckner jamming in L.A. and deciding to get something together.
Factoid: Sam's younger sister Candee Brown also plays the drums; she is drummer with the band New Reservoir.
