Dave decided to step in after Cage The Elephant's regular sticksman Jared Champion was forced to miss his band's show in Salt Lake City, Utah on Tuesday after his appendix burst on Monday evening.

Jared, who has since undergone surgery, will also miss tonight's (October 13) gig at the Los Angeles Forum, so Dave will fill in once again behind the kit.

Cage The Elephant's guitarist Lincoln Parrish tells spin.com that Grohl volunteered his services as soon as he heard about Jared's condition. Says the guitarist:
"Dave somehow heard what had happened and called our tour manager. He said, 'Hey, so do you think the guys would go for it?' Our manager was like, 'Um, yeah!'"

Cage the Elephant kicked off their set with another fill-in drummer (the tour's monitor engineer), and then Dave Grohl came on for the set's last five songs. The crowd went wild when he stormed the stage. Lincoln:

"I had to pinch myself. I turned around and Dave Grohl is playing the drums. It's an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Nobody can replace Jared. But it's Dave fucking Grohl. If you're going to be replaced by anybody, it might as well be the best."

The band have indicated that Jared Champion is likely to be fit enough to retake his place on the drum stool in San Diego next Monday, October 17.
